What is FSSAI?

If you want to run a food business legally in India, you first need an FSSAI registration.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is a regulatory body in India that governs and oversees the food-related businesses specific to their quality and standards of the production process across the nation.

It’s necessary that any Food Business Operator (FBO) in India, should have an FSSAI license in order to carry out their business. All the manufacturers, traders, restaurants who are involved in the food business has to ensure that the procedures, rules and regulations laid by FSSAI are adhered to without any exception. There are various benefits in getting an FSSAI license, but the most important one is the authentication of your food business.

Types of FSSAI License

The FSSAI Registration is issued depending on the nature of the food business, premises of operation, machinery installations and areas of service. Depending on the eligibility criteria, FSSAI registration for food business has three major categories

Central License

If the annual turnover of the business is above 20 crores then the food business operator shall apply for a central FSSAI license. Food Business Operators such as Export Oriented Units, large manufacturers, importers, food business operators in Central Government Agencies, airports, seaports, etc come under this scheme.

State License

If the annual turnover of the business is between 12 lakhs to 20 crores then the food business operator is required to apply for a state FSSAI license. Food business operators like small to medium-sized manufacturing units, storage, transporters, retailers, marketers, distributors, etc come under this scheme.

Basic License

If the annual turnover of the business is less than 12 lakhs then the food operator shall apply for a basic FSSAI license. Food Business Operators who are petty food manufacturers come under this scheme.

Steps to Apply For FSSAI Registration Online

The online FSSAI registration process is easier than the offline FSSAI registration procedure. Let us guide you through it.

  1. Go to the FSSAI site (https://foscos.fssai.gov.in/).
  2. When the page opens click on ‘Sign up’ which is on the top right of the screen.
  3. A sign-up form will appear. Fill in your contact details.
  4. Once you sign-up successfully, you will get a message ‘Account successfully created.’ You will also get a sign-up confirmation message on your mobile as an SMS and via e-mail as well.
  5. You now have an online account with FSSAI. This account is valid for 30 days only so make sure you apply for an FSSAI license within 30 days.
  6. When you are ready to apply for FSSAI registration, login into your FSSAI account with your username and password.
  7. Fill in the details in the application form (Form A or B). It will take some time and make sure that you have the necessary documents on your computer system beforehand.
  8. This application can be accepted or rejected by the department within 7 days.
  9. If the application is accepted, the food department will grant you a registration certificate with the registration number and the photo of the applicant. It takes usually 10-30 days for your FSSAI registration to come.

  • Authorised letter for the responsible person nominated
  • Water Analysis Report
  • Proof of possession of premises
  • Enterprise Registration Certificate
  • Applicable Copyrights and Product usage Licenses
  • Food Safety System plan
  • Source of Raw Materials / Milk
  • NOCs from the Municipal or Corporation Bodies
  • Supporting documents for Proof of Turnover
  • IE Code (If Applicable)
  • Other declaration forms or certificates may be required from the necessary departments.
